How to Relieve Heel Spurs?

Heel spurs are bony growths that typically extend toward the arches and begin on the front of the heel. Heel spurs may be asymptomatic and cause no pain, but they have also been linked with plantar fasciitis. Heel spurs can be caused by trauma to the heel, or from the effects of chronic inflammation in the foot. Heel spur relief is usually achieved by limiting and preventing the fasciitis and other inflammation that these growths can cause, although in some cases the spur itself can be removed.

Step 1

Rest. Avoid activities that cause pain in your heel and try to rest your heel as much as possible until the pain goes away. When you return to normal activity, thoroughly stretch your calf, ankle and foot before doing any physical activity.

Step 2

Wear arch-support inserts or orthotic devices in your shoes to support your feet and prevent further inflammation.

Step 3

Take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Step 4

Consider surgery. If the above treatments do not provide sufficient release, an orthopedic surgeon may be able to help relieve the pain, either by removing the heel spur or by doing a procedure called a plantar fascia release, which can help relieve the pain and discomfort.

Things You'll Need
