Ringworm, or tinea corporis, is a form of fungal infection that develops on the outer layer of the skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. Despite the name, a worm has nothing to do with the infection. Instead, ringworm was given its name because of the circular, red, itchy rash that appears during an infection. In the center of the red ring will be normal, healthy-looking sin, explains the Mayo Clinic. Other, closely related fungal infections include athlete's foot and jock itch. Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) point out that ringworm is contagious and can be spread easily from skin-to-skin contact. There are ways to prevent the spread of ringworm to others.
Step 1
Seek treatment for ringworm right away to minimize the risk of spreading the infection. There are several over-the-counter and prescription medications available. The options include oral and topical medication.
Step 2
Avoid touching other people with the affected area. Do not share any personal items until the infection has cleared. If possible, dispose of or disinfect any shared items with a mixture of equal parts water and bleach. For items unsafe to use with bleach, boil them for two to three minutes or use a disinfectant that is safe for the item. Some fabrics can withstand the use of a bleach spray that is used for air and surface disinfecting.
Step 3
Wash your hands with soap and water frequently. Dry them with a paper towel to avoid transmission of the fungus to a towel that is shared by others.
Step 4
Tell everyone close to you that you have ringworm. Advise them to avoid contact with you or anything that belongs to you that may have been in contact with the infected area.
Step 5
Keep the infected area dry and clean. Ringworm can spread to other parts of your body.
Step 6
Clean and disinfect shared spaces frequently. You can contract the infection again after you have recovered if the fungus is living in your environment. Be sure to use a cleaning product, like bleach, to remove the fungus thoroughly.
