Sambucol is the name brand for a supplement made from the extract of black elderberries. Using this supplement may help to reduce symptoms associated with the common cold or flu, though the medicinal properties of this berry are still controversial, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. Be sure to discuss the side effects of Sambucol black elderberry extract with your medical provider before beginning treatment with this supplement.
Stomach Irritation
Treatment with a supplement that contains elderberry may irritate your stomach, causing nausea or vomiting, Drugs.com warns. These side effects may also diminish your normal appetite. Consult your doctor if you develop severe stomach discomfort or if stomach-related side effects do not subside.
Dizziness or Weakness
Episodes of dizziness may occur after you take a dose of Sambucol black elderberry extract. Sensations of dizziness may also be accompanied by weakness and may make it difficult for you to stand or walk about normally. Remain seated until dizziness passes to limit your risk of sustaining an injury from falling down. If you experience persistent dizziness or severe weakness, seek prompt care from your physician.
Numbness
This type of elderberry supplement may cause unusual sensations of numbness to arise throughout your body. You may experience an uncomfortable tingling or pins-and-needles feeling in your hands, legs or feet. Numbness may also contribute to weakness or difficulty standing or walking. Sudden or persistent numbness -- especially if it only occurs on one side of your body -- should be reported to a doctor immediately. This side effect of Sambucol may also be a sign of a more serious medical problem, such as a stroke.
Pregnancy or Breastfeeding Complications
The safety and efficacy of black elderberry extract have not been evaluated in women who are pregnant or nursing. Consequently, expectant or breastfeeding mothers should not use Sambucol unless otherwise directed by a health care professional.
