Candida is a fungus that occurs naturally in your body. When candida grows excessively, it causes infections called candidiasis, or "yeast infections," in your mouth, genital area or stomach. Nearly 75 percent of women experience a genital yeast infection in their lifetimes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pregnancy, certain medications, diabetes and HIV/AIDS increase your risk for candidiasis. In addition to medical treatments and positive hygiene, certain foods may reduce candida-related problems.

Probiotics

Probiotics are healthy bacteria found in certain foods that promote positive digestion and may help prevent infections related to harmful bacteria. Though additional research is needed, incorporating probiotics into your diet may prevent or treat urinary tract infections and yeast infections, according to Mayo Clinic dietitian, Kathryn Zeratsky, N.D. Valuable sources of probiotics include yogurt with live active cultures, kefir --- a yogurt-like beverage, miso, fermented milk, unfermented milk and various fortified beverages. Consuming probiotics while taking antibiotics --- a common yeast infection trigger --- may prevent or reduce the intensity of recurrent yeast infections.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Your body requires omega-3 fatty acids and must obtain them from dietary sources. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends reducing saturated fat sources, such as red meat, in your diet and incorporating omega-3 fats to reduce inflammation and other symptoms related to candidiasis. For best results, incorporate a variety of fatty fish, such as salmon, albacore tuna, halibut, mackerel, sardines and lake trout, into your diet routinely. Plant-based sources, such as ground flaxseed, walnuts, walnut oil and canola oil, may provide similar benefits.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide rich amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support your body's ability to defend itself from infections and disease. Vitamin C is particularly important in healing from candidiasis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, because it strengthens your immune system and helps reduce inflammation. Valuable sources of vitamin C include red bell peppers, citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, kiwi, papaya, cantaloupe, tomatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, sweet potatoes, baked potatoes and squash. Incorporate a variety of fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables into your diet regularly for maximum antioxidant benefits. Dishes rich in vitamin C include veggie pizza, vegetable soup, citrus fruit salad and chunky tomato sauce.
