Lactobacillus acidophilus is bacteria that normally grow in your intestinal tract and vagina, Drugs.com reports. Acidophilus can be considered friendly bacteria due to its ability to exist within the body, usually without causing a clinically significant disease. Furthermore, Lactobacillus acidophilus promotes an acidic environment in certain parts of the body, which prevents the growth of most harmful bacteria. Lactobacillus bacteria have been used to treat yeast infections of the vagina and mouth, antibiotic-induced diarrhea and urinary tract infections. However, acidophilus has not been approved by the FDA and may cause a variety of side effects.

Disease in Patients with Weak Immune Systems

Lactobacillus, though friendly, is still a bacteria that can cause disease if it becomes over abundant in your body. Typically, Lactobacillus acidophilus only grows excessively in patients with a compromised, or weakened, immune system, according to MedlinePlus. You can develop a weak immune system if you are suffering HIV or AIDS and if you are taking medications, such as corticosteroids, that weaken the immune system. If you have a compromised immune system, Lactobacillus acidophilus, rarely, can cause disease, and therefore you should consult a healthcare provider before taking supplements of the bacteria.

Allergies

Supplements containing Lactobacillus acidophilus can cause allergies, MayoClinic.com warns. An allergy to the bacteria typically manifests as mild to severe abdominal discomfort that can be accompanied by stomach pain and changes in bowel habits. Allergic responses are usually seen in patients who are lactose sensitive, or have lactose intolerance. If are lactose sensitive, consult your physician before taking Lactobacillus acidophilus.

Endocarditis

Your heart has four main valves that are used to control the flow of blood within the organ. These valves often provide an area for bacteria to grow. If these infections take hold, they cause a disease called endocarditis. Rarely, Lactobacillus acidophilus can cause endocarditis, Drugs.com explains. Usually, this side effect occurs only after you have had recent dental surgery or similar procedures. Endocarditis caused by Lactobacillus could also occur if you have poor dental hygiene. If you are about to undergo dental surgery, you should ask your dentist or doctor about prophylactic treatment to prevent endocarditis.
