How to Inject Insulin Using a Levemir Pen

Diabetes refers to a chronic disease in which your blood contains too much glucose (sugar). According to the Mayo Clinic, your body makes insulin (chemical) in your pancreas to control these sugar levels. In diabetes, your pancreatic cells are unable to produce insulin and a synthetic form of insulin is needed. The Levemir pen is pre-filled with insulin to control your sugar levels for 24 hours. There are specific steps on how to inject insulin using the Levemir pen.

Step 1

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Dry them well.

Step 2

Remove the blue cap from the Levemir pen and use the alcohol swab to wipe the rubber stopper of the NovoFine needle.

Step 3

Remove the tab from the NovoFine needle and screw it onto the pre-filled insulin syringe. Check to make sure the connection is snug.

Step 4

Remove the plastic cap located on the outside of the NovoFine Needle.

Step 5

Remove the needle cap.

Step 6

Check that the dose selector located at the far end of the insulin syringe is set at zero.

Step 7

Turn the dial of the dose selector to the correct dosage recommended by your doctor. Do not press the push button.

Step 8

Locate the injection site on your skin as recommended by your doctor.

Step 9

Pinch your skin using your non-dominant hand.

Step 10

Push the NovoFine needle into your skin using your dominant hand. Make sure the needle is situated 90 degrees to your skin.

Step 11

Push the "Push" button located near the dial to its full extent. The dose dial will return to zero.

Step 12

Hold the needle in your skin for six seconds to make sure all insulin is used.

Step 13

Withdraw the NovoFine needle and do not recap the needle.

Step 14

Remove the needle carefully and dispose of it in a biohazards container.

Step 15

Replace the cap on the insulin syringe and store it in a safe place at room temperature.
