The weight loss supplement sold with the brand name Dexatrim has had a variety of ingredient changes over its marketed life, usually due to attention being called to suspicious substances. For example, Dexatrim contained phenylpropanolamine until the FDA banned this ingredient in 2001. A year later, the FDA ordered all products with ephedra recalled, so once again, Dexatrim had a change in ingredients, the website The Diet Channel reports. Dexatrim products now contain such ingredients as chromium, pantothenic acid, manganese, vitamins B-6, C and E, calcium and other vitamins and minerals. Some of these still may cause side effects. Despite the company's adherence to FDA recalls, Dexatrim is not regulated by the government agency, so it may not produce all the results its manufacturer claims.
Vitamin C Side Effects
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, may produce some non-serious side effects that physicians expect to ease and disappear as you become accustomed to having larger amounts of the vitamin in your body. It can, for example, cause flushing, meaning your skin becomes warm and red suddenly, forcing you to sweat. You also may experience pain as either headaches or cramps in your stomach from vitamin C use. As your body adjusts to ascorbic acid, you may find it disrupts your digestive process. This can result in nausea, vomiting and loose stools, Drugs.com indicates. If any of these types of side effects feel severe or linger, ask your doctor about them in relation to taking Dexatrim.
Vitamin E Side Effects
Vitamin E, one of the ingredients in Dexatrim, may induce some side effects, primarily as you begin using the supplement. Although all common side effects of vitamin E classify as non-serious, Drugs.com recommends consulting your doctor if you experience any of those mentioned here. Vitamin E may induce diarrhea, especially when you start taking Dexatrim. This commonly happens when you take any new supplement or drug into your system for the first time. A newly ingested substance may cause your digestion process to become disturbed. This can cause both watery stools and flatulence. The vitamin also may cause weakness throughout your body and a sense of fatigue may set in. The supplement also may cause visual disturbances such as vision blurring.
Calcium Side Effects
Although you need calcium in your body, especially to help maintain teeth and bones, it is one ingredient in Dexatrim that may produce some serious side effects, the Mayo Clinic reports. For example, it may cause you to develop an abnormal or irregular heartbeat, a condition known as an arrhythmia. Such a disruption to your heartbeat can cause serious, even life-threatening health problems. See your physician immediately if your heart feels like it skips beats. Calcium also can induce nausea, sensations of tingling, dizziness and flushing, all of which classify as serious side effects.
