Men's hair grows about a half-inch per month, according to Rush University. The hair shaft is made out of a protein called keratin. For every shaft of hair, there is a follicle under your skin. Out of your approximately 300,000 scalp hairs, about 150 will fall out each day. This is normal. Your hair is constantly growing, resting and being replaced. To keep hair healthy, vitamin supplements may help, but always consult a doctor.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps make collagen for your blood vessels, ensuring adequate blood flow to the follicles, necessary for a man's healthy scalp and hair. Taking vitamin C for its antioxidant properties may also help with thinning hair, if baldness is an issue. As an antioxidant, vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals, thus preventing cell and tissue damage. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises daily doses of 500 to 1000 mg, divided between two doses.
Thiamine
Thiamine, or B1, is part of the B-complex family of vitamins, all of which help promote healthy hair, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Vitamin B1 also helps metabolize fats and proteins, necessary for strong hair. Thiamine may assist you in coping with stress; it's known as an anti-stress vitamin. Periods of increased stress may cause your hair to shed prematurely. Columbia University calls this condition telogen effluvium. Although your hair should grow back without intervention once the stressor has passed, thiamine may provide a means of stress prevention.
Biotin
Biotin, also known as vitamin H, is another B-complex vitamin. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that biotin is key in metabolizing amino acids that are necessary for the building of proteins, like keratin, that makes up the outside layer of a strand of your hair. UMMC adds that biotin may prove beneficial to hair that is brittle or splitting. Some hair care products use biotin in their formulas.
