Esomeprazole, the generic name of Nexium, is a type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid by inhibiting the enzyme that produces the acid. Nexium is used for treating the following conditions: gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, gastric ulcers and erosive esophagitis where stomach acid has eroded esophageal tissue. This medication is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome where a tumor develops (gastrinoma) that produces the hormone gastrin (responsible for acid secretion).This drug was approved in 2001 by the Food and Drug Administration.
Headaches
Headaches are one of the most commonly reported side effects when taking Nexium. If headaches do not subside after several doses then a physician should be consulted.
Gastrointestinal Disturbances
Side effects of nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea,and constipation may be experienced. If any of these side effects persist or become acute, for example severe and prolonged diarrhea, seek medical attention immediately.
Less Common Effects
Other less frequent side effects may occur when taking Nexium including dizziness, migraines, insomnia and vision problems. Additionally, conditions such as depression, increased nervousness and confusion are among the less commonly experienced side effects of this drug. Fluid retention such as swelling of the lower extremities along with joint pain may also occur. While these effects are infrequent, a physician should be contacted if any of these symptoms are experienced.
