How to Stop Taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a combination birth control pill used used to prevent pregnancy. Although it is an effective method of birth control when used correctly, there are reasons why a woman may want to discontinue Othro Tri-Cyclen, such as side effects, a desire to become pregnant or the decision to use another form of birth control. Luckily, it's simple to stop taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Step 1

Determine if you wish to use another birth control method. This is a personal choice that will be based upon your situation and personal preference. However, if you're planning to switch to a different birth control method, have the new birth control on hand and ready to take upon stopping Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Step 2

Decide when you want to stop taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. If you are planning on using another hormonal birth control option or want to become pregnant, it may be best to finish out your current package of Ortho Tri-Cyclen so you can have a fresh start for your next menstrual cycle.

Step 3

Prepare yourself for possible side effects. Although any side effects from going off the pill should be minimal, there will be a hormonal change that takes place as your body adjusts to its natural state. This can cause tenderness of the breasts, headaches, mood swings, tiredness or changes in weight.

Step 4

Stop taking the pills. Remember, as soon as you do not take even one pill on time, you will not be protected against pregnancy, should you choose to have unprotected sex.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are going to be using another form of birth control after going off Ortho Tri-Cyclen, talk to your doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of other birth control options.
  • If you are going off Ortho Tri-Cyclen because you want to conceive a child, use a non-hormonal birth control method, such as condoms or spermicide, for a few months while you wait for your menstrual cycle to return to normal. This may make it easier to pinpoint due dates and fetal age when you do conceive.
