Although the traditional location for mounting a chin-up bar is the wall, you can buy models that hang from the ceiling. This has the advantage of a significantly wider set of mounting options. The disadvantage is that you often have to do extra work to find safe mounting points. Even with the extra work, set aside just a few hours for this project, which is well within the abilities of even beginning do-it-yourselfers.
Step 1
Choose the room where you want to hang your chin-up bar.
Step 2
Locate a ceiling joist in a space where you want your bar. If the room has exposed joists, this is easy. If not, use a stud finder on the ceiling to find the joists.
Step 3
Set your stepladder beneath the joist where you want to mount your chin-up bar.
Step 4
Place your chin-up bar in position on the joist, laying the mounting plate level against the base of the joist.
Step 5
Mark the joist by passing your pencil through the screw holes in the mounting plate of your chin-up bar.
Step 6
Drill a hole in your joist at each point you marked with the pencil. Use a drill bit 1/8 inch narrower than the diameter of your wood screws.
Step 7
Swap out your drill bit for a screwdriver bit.
Step 8
Set the chin-up bar back in position, aligning the holes in the mounting plate with the holes you just drilled.
Step 9
Screw the bar in place with a wood screw for each set of holes.
