5 Things You Need to Know About Lipoplasty

1. Lipoplasty: AKA Liposuction

Lipoplasty, more commonly referred to as liposuction, is a cosmetic surgery where a special vacuum sucks excess fat out the body. Liposuction can be performed almost anywhere a person has excess fat. The abdomen, butt, hips, thighs and face are all popular places to have liposuction. Patients can even have lipoplasty on their upper arms and knees.

2. Healthy People are the Best Candidates for Lipoplasty

People who are in generally good health, both physically and emotionally, are the right candidates for liposuction (or any cosmetic surgery, for that matter). Because lipoplasty can be a major surgery, it is important to discuss your health history with your plastic surgeon. People with diabetes, heart problems or autoimmune problems should not have liposuction, as it could complicate the surgery. Good skin elasticity is also important for liposuction. Skin that has lost its elasticity from years of being overweight is harder to achieve good results through lipoplasty.

3. Overweight People Need not Apply for Lipoplasty

A big myth floating around about lipoplasty is that is will help you lose weight. Well, technically it will, since it removes excess fat. However, it is not a weight loss program. People who are considering liposuction should not be extremely overweight. Liposuction is better suited for individuals who have dieted and exercised their way to a healthy weight but still need a boost getting rid of stubborn fat. Another big bummer of liposuction--it doesn't get rid of cellulite.

4. Have Lipoplasty in Your Doctor's Office

Depending on the complexity of the lipoplasty, it may be done right in the plastic surgeon's office or outpatient facility. You receive a local anesthesia on the area, leaving you awake for the procedure. If the procedure is more invasive, full anesthesia and an overnight stay in a hospital may be required. As with any surgery, complications are possible with liposuction. Infection, numbness and internal punctures are all possible. Lumpy, unattractive skin is also a possibility following lipoplasty. This may be temporary due to fluid build up under the skin, which needs should drain with needles.

5. Lipoplasty Results Take Time

Unlike some cosmetic procedures, the results from liposuction are not immediately apparent. It may take several weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside. Then it may take another three to six months for the area to take on its permanent appearance. The results of lipoplasty can last forever, so long as patients eat well and exercise regularly to keep weight off.
