Gyrotonic movement is an exercise program offered in exercise facilities, spas and dance studios around the United States. Gyrotonics incorporates strength and flexibility training within a series of three-dimensional movements that you perform on your own or with the use of specialized props. You participate in the technique as a part of a group setting, or through one-on-one instruction with a certified gyrotonic exercise trainer.

Identification

Gyrotonic movement was created by Juliu Horvath, a professional ballet dancer. Horvath's signature exercise pattern combines movements from swimming, tai chi, gymnastics, yoga and dance to help you lose weight, gain muscle and experience better health, according to the Gyrotonic Movement Center, a gyrotonic fitness facility in Seattle, Washington.

Theories/Speculation

Gyrotonic exercise proponents purport that the practice allows you to strengthen and stretch your muscles while you simultaneously build up the connective tissues surrounding your joints, says the American College of Sports Medicine, ACSM. Furthermore, gyrotonic movement advocates claim that the exercise improves your balance, muscle strength, flexibility and joint mobility, adds the ACSM. However, no independent clinical trials conducted by U.S. medical researchers back up the claims of gyrotonic proponents.

Methodology

During a gyrotonic movement session, your certified gyrotonic instructor takes you through a series of choreographed movements, says the ACSM. These movements include twisting your body from side to side; bending backwards and forwards and moving your body around in circular patterns. You perform these movements standing up, sitting or lying down on the floor, and sitting on low, padded stools.

Types

Numerous gyrotonic movement studios offer different types of gyrotonic classes. For example, at some studios you can take beginner classes, advanced classes and abdominal-only gyrotonic classes. Some classes offer a variety of movements spaced out over the course of an hour. Still other classes offer hour-long series of slow, continuous movements, says Reflexion Fitness, a gyrotonic studio in Bedford Hills, New York.

Warning

More research is needed to determine the benefits of gyrotonic exercise, says the ACSM. Therefore, speak with your doctor about the risks and benefits of the exercise regimen before you enroll in a class or hire a personal gyrotonic fitness trainer.
