You may choose to follow a low acidic diet for many reasons. Foods that are high in acidity may aggravate acid reflux disease or gastric ulcers, acid may erode your tooth enamel, or you may be following a low pH diet for health and weight loss. Foods fall into three categories: acidic, neutral and basic, or alkaline. Look for foods that are neutral or basic if you are avoiding acidic foods.
Breads and Grains
Breads, grains and legumes are usually neutral or basic, with a few exceptions. Brown rice and wheat tend to be acidic. Buckwheat, millet, spelt, lentils, soy flour, soybeans, tofu and lima beans are all either neutral or alkaline.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables have varying amounts of acid content. Some low acidity vegetables are celery, zucchini, peas, cabbage, avocado, artichokes and wheat grass. Low acid fruits include cherries, bananas, raspberries and peaches. Tomatoes and citrus fruits such as limes and lemons are acidic in nature but are later alkalized in the body.
Protein Foods
Almost all meats are acidic in the body. Milk and dairy products are close to neutral, with the exception of hard cheese, which is acidic. Most nuts and seeds are acidic, but flax seeds, Brazil nuts, sesame seeds, fennel seeds and almonds are all either neutral or alkalizing in the body.
