There are no exercise techniques proven to increase a person's height. Although some people try exercises, supplements and special diets to increase their total height, it is not likely that these can lead to any appreciable change in an adult's stature. However, several simple home remedies can help to create the illusion that you are taller than you really are.

Factors

According to MayoClinic.com, several inter-related factors can influence a person's adult height. In general, a person's genetics are the primary determining factor regarding his adult height. Inadequate nutrition during childhood can stunt a person's growth, as can several medical conditions. Physical activity does not appreciably influence a person's adult height. After a person has reached his full adult stature, there is no reliable method for facilitating growth.

Health Considerations

In general, a slightly short stature has nothing to do with a person's overall health. However, a very short stature of less than 4 foot 10 inches fits the diagnostic criteria for dwarfism, a medical condition. According to MayoClinic.com, people with dwarfism generally have underlying hormonal imbalances, such as achondroplasia, Turner syndrome and growth hormone deficiency. In other cases, poor nutrition is to blame or the cause can not be conclusively identified.

Teen Nutrition

You may be capable of altering your height if you are a teenager. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that children undergo extremely rapid growth during the teen years, and that proper nutrition is essential for overall health, growth and well-being. To encourage your body to grow to its fullest possible height, eat a balanced diet that is low in fat and sugar, and high in lean protein sources, whole grains and vegetables. Seek treatment if you suspect you have an eating disorder such as binge eating or anorexia nervosa; these can stunt your growth during puberty.

Posture

You may be able to make yourself look taller by improving your posture. If you have a tendency to slouch, make an effort to hold your head higher and to keep your neck in line with your spine. A nice pair of shoes can improve your overall posture, particularly if they have slightly elevated heals. In addition to improving your appearance, good posture can also prevent back pain and other chronic discomforts.

Clothing Styles

A carefully selected wardrobe can help you to look taller. Choose shirts in the same color family as your pants; for example, you can wear a blue shirt with your favorite jeans. Cuffless, long pants also create an illusion of height when compared to shorts or capris. Avoid horizontal stripes and ostentatious belts; these interrupt the eye's perception of your body, making you look shorter.
