Bipolar depression is a form of depression characterized by alternating episodes of depression and mania. Another term for bipolar depression is manic depression. Symptoms of this condition may vary greatly from person to person; however, symptoms may include feelings of sadness, lack of or excessive sleep, loss of appetite or overeating, feelings of inadequacy or worthlessness and possible thoughts of suicide. Doctors may prescribe antidepressants and sleep aids to help treat symptoms of this condition. However, certain herbs may be used as an alternative treatment to help reduce stress and induce a calming effect.
