Health Effects of Zinc Citrate

Zinc citrate is a widely used supplement available over-the-counter. Zinc supplements may reduce the severity and length of the common cold and are used to treat other mild symptoms and conditions like acne and canker sores. Some studies indicate zinc has an effect on people with behavioral conditions like ADHD, by decreasing the symptoms, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Adults with age-related macular degeneration and conditions that change the way the body absorbs zinc may also benefit from the use of zinc citrate.

Immune System Health Effects

The American Zinc Association recommends zinc as a vital trace element for humans, animals and plants. Essential for many of the body's functions, the mineral is found in the cells, tissues, fluids, organs and bones. The immune system benefits of zinc include an increase in the body's ability to fight off infection and illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhea. Supplementing with zinc citrate is thought to increase the positive effects of zinc on the immune system, reducing the length of the common cold.

Zinc Citrate Effects on Skin & Eyes

Studies indicate taking zinc citrate may improve the condition of the skin, benefiting those with acne, according to the UMMC. In addition, zinc citrate may help slow the progression of macular degeneration, an eye disease that causes vision to deteriorate. Taking 80mg of the supplement along with other supplements like vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta carotene and copper could slow the disease, as indicated in a clinical trial known as the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS1). However, these results are not consistent with other studies and the effects are still being determined.

Behavioral Health Effects

Taking zinc citrate supplements may have an effect on behavioral health, particularly ADHD. Slight improvements in the hyperactive, impulsive and impaired socialization aspects of the condition were noticed in some children, according to the UMMC.

Adverse Health Effects of Zinc Citrate

While zinc citrate supplements are considered safe when taken in dosages of 40mg daily, drug interactions may result with certain medications. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting and upset stomach. Taking high doses may result in headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, hallucinations, sweating, lack of coordination, anemia, intolerance to alcohol, weakened immune system functioning and increased cholesterol levels, according to the UMMC.
