Gout attacks can be a nuisance and can be extremely painful and even debilitating in some people. Having gout is linked to diet, since it occurs when there is a high level of uric acid, a byproduct of purines, in the bloodstream. Gout usually affects the joints of the toes, knees or ankles.

Risk Factors

Gout is more common in men, those who drink alcohol and those who are on water pills such as hydrochlorothiazide. Persons who are obese, have diabetes or have kidney disease can also develop this condition.

Treatment

Prescription medications are available to treat acute and chronic gout. Doctors often order anti-inflammatory medications, a medication called colchicines, steroids and pain medications to help relieve symptoms. Chronic gout can be treated by a medication called allopurinol, which helps to prevent recurrent attacks.

Prevention

Unfortunately, gout disorder may not be preventable. It may run in families, making you more susceptible to having gout. But you may be able to prevent gout symptoms from being triggered if you follow a low-purine diet.

Purines

Uric acid crystals accumulate around the joints as a result of a high level of purines in the bloodstream. Purine occurs naturally in the blood, but you can avoid certain foods that are high in purines in order to prevent gout attacks. Avoid organ meats, anchovies, herring, mushrooms and asparagus. Limit your intake of animal proteins such as red meat and seafood. Avoid alcohol and high-fat dairy products.

Recommendations

Since obesity is linked to gout, it is important to have a healthy diet. Instead of animal protein, choose vegetable protein sources such as beans, legumes or tofu. Eat low-fat or nonfat dairy products. Choose whole-grain carbohydrates rather than white rice, breads or foods made with white flour. Drink lots of water rather than sugary juices or soda. Avoid sugary foods that are low in nutrition and high in calories which can contribute to becoming overweight. Being obese can contribute to other health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis, so it is a good idea to lose weight if you are overweight.
