Handlebar grips will slowly deteriorate over time due to normal riding practices. Fitting your bike with a new pair of grips will help you to maintain control of the handlebars during high-speed maneuvers. Vital BMX recommends replacing your handlebar grips on a regular basis. Foam handlebar grips help to prevent bruising during high-impact tricks. Measuring the dimensions of your hands will guarantee that your replacement grips meet your riding specifications. Choose a pair of handlebar grips that has been designed for your discipline of bike riding.

Step 1

Rotate your hand palm side up. Extend your fingers as far as possible and place them side by side. Stretch the blade of the tape measure from the base of your palm to the tip of your middle finger. Repeat the measuring process with your opposing hand.

Step 2

Create a 90-degree angle with your forefinger and thumb. Extend the blade of the tape measure across your palm to measure the width of your hand. Repeat the measuring process with your opposing hand. Write down the unique dimensions of your hands for later use.

Step 3

Extend the tape measure down the length of your new handlebar grips. Compare the length of the grips to the width of your hands. Make sure the width of your hands does not exceed the length of the handlebar grips. Measure around the handlebar grips to ensure your fingers will not overlap.
