Chemotherapy, also called chemo, is a way to treat different types of cancer. Chemotherapy is not the same treatment for everybody and treatment differs with the type of cancer it is combating. There are three ways in which chemotherapy responds. Some chemo will destroy the actual cancer cells. Other therapies may stop the cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the body. Last, therapy may be used to slow the growth of cancer. Some people may experience side effects to chemo and there are certain foods that may serve as remedies.
Constipation Relief
Some people undergoing chemo experience constipation. Normal bowel movements can vary from person to person but having less than three a week can be a result of constipation according to the National Institutes of Health. It is important to eat foods that are high in fiber such as fruits, vegetables and whole grain breads. The American Dietetic Association recommends consuming 20 to 35 g of fiber every day. Also, drinking 8 cups of fluid everyday will help relieve constipation. Should conditions of constipation continue or if pain is associated with it, your health care provider needs to be consulted.
Foods For Nausea
During chemotherapy, it is important to stay away from foods that make you feel sick to your stomach. These varieties include greasy or fried foods, spicy or sweet foods. If smell of certain foods makes you nauseated, stay away from them. Foods that are easy on the stomach and may lead to less nausea are bananas, crackers, broiled or baked chicken, clear sodas and clear fruit juices according to the National Cancer Institute. The goal is to manage the nausea so vomiting does not result. Should vomiting occur, your health care provider needs to be consulted as medicine may be needed.
Protein-Rich Foods
Cancer can cause many changes in the body and body functions. Metabolism, which is the way the body uses nutrients for energy, is altered. Nutrient deficiencies may result causing fatigue and malaise. Protein is an important source of nutrition to replace while on chemo. This important compound is needed by all body cells for energy, repair and cell replacement. Foods that contain high levels of protein include red meat, eggs, milk and soybeans. Protein drinks are an option if they sit better in the stomach.
