If you are a senior looking for an online weight training program that uses dumbbells, you are in luck because there are a variety of formats from which to choose. Videos, prerecorded classes and live, interactive classes are all options. Weight-training programs that use dumbbells are effective, but you must know what you are doing to perform the exercises properly to avoid injury.

Demand Fitness

DemandFitness.com offers online classes categorized as Active Living, Fit Over 55, Assisted Living and Limited Mobility. Classes, like gentle strength and beginner strength, are weight-training programs that use dumbbells and cater to seniors. Prerecorded video classes are taught by certified fitness professionals and can be viewed on demand. Weekly, monthly, three-month, six-month and yearly memberships include unlimited access to all classes. Longer-term memberships include the option to download classes to your computer as well as tools, such as fitness trackers, goal trackers and health assessments.

Online Personal Fitness Trainers

Access to both prerecorded and live online weight training programs for seniors is available at OnlinePersonalFitnessTrainers.com. Prerecorded videos are available 24/7. Certain memberships include access to live classes via SKYPE and can be scheduled by sending a request via email for a live consultation or training session. Silver and gold memberships are available, paid monthly or annually. Gold members get one free live session a month. As of 2010, Silver members are charged about $45 extra for each live class.

Physiic

Live, interactive weight-training classes and programs for seniors are available for a low, pay-per-class fee at Physiic.com, pronounced "physique." Dumbbells are used in the Fitness Over 50 class, Baby Boomer Boot Camp, Sail into Your 60s and Doctor's Orders! class. Hour-long classes are about $10 and 30-minute classes are about $5. Certified personal trainers can see you via webcams to ensure you are using proper form and keep you training safely. If you have a physical condition, like back or knee pain, you can tell your trainer, and they will make modifications to work around any weaknesses or physical limitations.

Considerations

Online senior weight-training programs using dumbbells provide an affordable, convenient, easily accessible way for seniors to maintain and improve their strength. The Exercise is Medicine program developed by the American College of Sports Medicine is calling on health care providers to assess the physical activity of all patients and prescribe exercise recommendations. Seniors who are not interested in joining a gym or can't afford a personal trainer can fulfill their exercise requirements using these online programs.
