Cancer is a condition in which abnormal cells grow in the body. There are various types of cancer including cancer of the lung, colon, breast, bones, skin. Certain diet and lifestyle changes may help reduce your risk for various types of cancer. Specifically, certain food proteins may be helpful in cancer prevention.

Legumes

MayoClinic.com says that consuming proteins from legumes may help prevent cancer. Legumes are plant-based foods that contain phytoestrogens. These chemicals act like estrogen in your body and may help prevent prostate cancer, according to MayoClinic.com. Legumes include beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, and soybeans. Soy products are classified as legumes and include tempeh, tofu, and edamame.

Fish

Fish is a healthy source of protein that may help prevent cancer and other health problems. MayoClinic.com reports that omega-3 fatty acids are a healthy type of fat that may reduce your risk of developing cancer. Studies have been inconclusive. However, these fats may still benefit you, since omega-3 fats can help protect you from inflammation that can lead to many health problems. Good sources of omega-3 fats include fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and herring.

Low-Fat Protein

MedlinePlus says that eating too much fat may contribute to obesity, a risk factor for cancer development. Decreasing your daily intake of fat, especially polyunsaturated fat like corn, canola and soybean oils, may help prevent the development of cancer. You can reduce the fat in your diet by choosing protein sources that are fat-free or low in fat and cooking them without refined oils. Good choices include skinless chicken, lean meat, and fat-free or skim dairy products.
