Weight loss is simple, but not easy. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, your body will burn the excess energy it has stored as fat. But many people find this difficult, so they seek shortcuts and employ ill-advised strategies that claim to make weight loss easy, but actually do not. The best way to lose weight is to exercise and stick to a low-calorie, balanced diet that incorporates fruits and vegetables, lean meats, dairy and whole grains.

Starving Yourself

Too many people believe that drastically cutting down on calories is a good way to lose weight. But cutting down your calories too much or too quickly might cause your body to slow down its metabolism. In other words, your body thinks it's starving, so it ramps up its energy storage, which makes it more difficult to lose weight. Prevent this problem by decreasing your caloric intake in a healthy manner: stick to a balanced diet.

Effectiveness of Weight-Loss Products

Many weight-loss products make ridiculous claims about their effectiveness. These manufacturers count on people falling for their advertising tricks, but experts know that these products are nearly worthless. Avoid any products that claim you will lose weight in a certain area, such as your hips, buttocks or stomach. It is not possible to lose weight in a specific area of your body by exercising only that part. Also, avoid any products that claim you will lose weight in an unreasonably short amount of time. Chances are the product's advertisers are exaggerating its effectiveness or lying outright.

Skipping Meals

Skipping meals to decrease your overall caloric intake is a bad idea, but many people do exactly that and call it a diet. The problem arises toward the end of the day, when people who skip meals start to feel increasingly hungry. This increases their chances of overeating during dinner or dessert. The best plan is to eat five or six small, healthy meals, spaced evenly throughout your day.

High-Protein or Low Carbohydrate Diets

Some people believe that high-protein or low-carbohydrate diets are healthy ways to lose weight. But these sorts of diets might be hazardous to your health, according to the Weight-Control Information Network. For example, the organization points out that eating too many high-protein foods, such as meat, eggs and cheese, might actually damage your body. High-protein foods typically have higher fat and cholesterol levels, so you face an increased risk of heart disease. Cutting your carbohydrate intake too much might also lead to health risks, such as gout and kidney stones. The organization warns consumers to avoid these sorts of fad diets and instead adhere to a healthy, balanced diet.
