Which Foods to Avoid with Rectal Cancer

It is important to maintain a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet if you have rectal cancer. Cancer of the colon or the rectum is referred to as colorectal cancer. Symptoms of this cancer might include narrow stools, a disruption in bowel routine, weakness and fatigue, stomach cramping and discomfort, and blood in the stool. Some foods should be avoided if you are diagnosed with rectal cancer.

Refined Foods

Avoid consuming refined foods if you suffer from rectal cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The Center advises that avoiding refined foods such as white breads, white pastas and sugar may be helpful in the treatment phase of rectal cancer. Refined foods are those that have been stripped of their fiber and bran component, leaving a product that contains less fiber, vitamins and minerals. Fiber may help relieve symptoms of constipation or diarrhea, according to the University of Maryland. These are two symptoms commonly experienced by people with rectal cancer. Without this fiber, these symptoms may continue to be aggravated or worsen. Avoid refined foods such as those made from white flour or white sugar, including many processed, packaged goods. Alternative fiber-rich sources of fiber include whole grain bread, oatmeal and brown rice.

Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided during the treatment of rectal cancer. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, avoiding these stimulants may help boost and improve your overall health. Alcohol and caffeine are empty sources of calories that may contribute to obesity. Obesity and an unhealthy weight may stress your body systems and weaken your ability to fight infections and harmful substances. The University of Maryland advise you consume 6 to 8 glasses of water per day and avoid or eliminate the use of alcoholic and caffeine beverages.

Foods With Trans-Fats

Trans-fatty acids and high-fat foods may be good choices if you suffer from rectal cancer. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that you reduce or eliminate sources of trans-fatty acids in your diet. Sources include commercially prepared items including crackers, cookies, cakes, and pies. Other sources include french fries, margarine and processed foods. These foods are high in unhealthy fats that may contribute to weight gain, obesity and a nutrient-poor diet. It is important to maintain a healthy weight and a nutrient-rich diet when treating colon cancer in order to build and maintain a strong immune system that can fight against infection and harmful toxins. Alternative sources of healthy fats include olive oil, avocados and nuts and seeds.
