The sacred heart diet is also known by a few other names, such as the Cleveland Clinic diet, the Miami Heart Institute diet and the Spokane diet. The diet has no known origin, despite the fact that many people attribute it to Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital. As a crash diet, it lasts for seven days and is not recommended as a healthy way to lose weight.

Step 1

Make the sacred heart diet soup, the basis of the diet. Recipes for the soup vary depending on which version of the diet you're following. For a basic recipe, Diet.com recommends mixing green onions, beef or chicken broth, celery, green beans, green peppers, carrots and stewed tomatoes inside a pot. Add water until everything's covered and then boil for 10 minutes or until the vegetables are soft.

Step 2

Eat fruit and soup on day one. Avoid bananas; any other fruits are acceptable. Eat as much as you want, until you feel full.

Step 3

Eat only vegetables and soup on day two. Avoid starchy vegetables like corn and beans, but you can have a single baked potato for dinner. Don't eat any fruit.

Step 4

Eat fruits and vegetables on day three. No starchy vegetables, no potatoes and no bananas are allowed on this day. Drink as much soup as you want.

Step 5

Drink soup and skim milk on day four. You can also eat as many bananas as you want, but no other fruits or vegetables.

Step 6

Eat up to 20 oz. of beef and up to six tomatoes on day five. Drink as much soup as you want.

Step 7

Eat up to 20 oz. of beef, soup and vegetables on day six. Avoid starchy vegetables, including potatoes. Green leafy vegetables are encouraged.

Step 8

Boil brown rice and add vegetables for day seven. Eat until full, with no limits. Drink soup and unsweetened fruit juice.
