Effects of Estrogen
Though the connection isn't fully clear, the American Diabetes Association states that there is indeed a link between estrogen and blood sugar. The thinking is that the extra estrogen levels make a woman's body more sensitive to insulin.
Effects of Progesterone
Progesterone is another hormone that can vary depending on where a woman is in her menstrual cycle. This hormone does the opposite of estrogen in regards to blood sugar. For someone with diabetes, additional insulin might be required, and added monitoring of blood sugar is recommended.
Effects of Mood Swings
Many women struggle with emotional variation during and prior to menstruation. This can affect blood sugar levels as well. Someone with high blood sugar may experience even greater swings when moods are already heightened. If a woman experiences depressive moods due to her menstrual cycle, the opposite may occur.
