Estrogen is the primary female hormone needed for the function of the female sexual system. When the female sexual organs develop, estrogen is the key hormone that regulates the process. Estrogen does not work alone. Progesterone is the other main female hormone, and the two work together to regulate menstruation and to prepare the uterus for conception. Aging and health disorders that cause hormone imbalances may lower estrogen levels. Taking herbs with estrogenic compounds may be beneficial for raising the quantity of female hormones to normal levels. Be sure to discuss the use of estrogenic herbs with your physician.

Red Clover

Isoflavones are estrogenic compounds present in red clover. These phytochemicals behave like the female hormone estrogen in the body. As a consequence of its estrogenic action, red clover may be useful treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, heart disease and bone loss. The use of isoflavones has not been studied conclusively, and caution should be used when taking red clover. The recommended dose of red clover is 40 to 160 mg per day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Licorice

Licorice, a member of the pea family, has been used medicinally for thousands of years. The herb has estrogenic properties and should be used only under the care of a qualified health care provider. Pregnant women should not take licorice because it may induce labor. Women at risk for breast cancer should also avoid taking licorice, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Fennel

Fennel's main active compound, anethole, is estrogenic and can be taken to induce menstruation for women with menstruation irregularities caused by hormone imbalances, according to Holistic Online. Fennel is also used to induce milk production in lactating women and to alleviate the symptoms of menopause.
