Entocort EC is an extended release medication used to treat mild and moderate forms of Crohn's disease. The active ingredient in the medicine is the steroid budesonide. Entocort EC helps decrease inflammation associated with the bowel disease.
Availability
Entocort EC is available as pink and grey, extended release capsules. The only dosage amounts offered is 3mg.
Administration
Patients take 9mg of Entocort EC each morning for up to eight weeks of active cases of Crohn's disease. After remission on symptoms, patients take 6mg daily for three months.
Side Effects
Some side effects of Entocort EC include bruising easily, displacement of body fat, nausea, headache and increased blood pressure. It's recommended that side effects be reported to a physician.
Precautions
Because the medication is an extended-release capsule, it must not be opened, crushed or chewed. Drugs.com says to avoid drinking grapefruit juice with the medicine because it may cause too much medicine to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Contraindications
People with heart disease, high blood pressure, gastric ulcers, kidney disease and liver disease should not take Entocort EC. Doctors should be informed of all of the patient's medical conditions before he begins the medicine.
