Planters peanuts is the largest nut company in the world and has existed for over 100 years. The company offers various types of peanuts along with cashews, walnuts, pistachios, almonds and sunflower seeds. Peanut flavors sold by Planters include Dry Roasted, Cocktail and Honey Roasted.
History
Planters was created in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1906 by Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi. In 1918, Planters broke ground as the first company to have a salted nut advertised in a news publication, the Saturday Evening Post, according to the Planters website. In 1928 Planters Cocktail peanuts became a new product for the company, and their Dry Roasted peanuts made their first appearance in 1962. In the mid 1980s, Planters' Honey Roasted peanuts became available as well. In 2006, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Dry Roasted
A 28 g serving of Planters Dry Roasted regular peanuts has 160 calories, according to the Planters website. This flavor also has 14 g of total fat, 8 percent of daily recommended sodium intake and 7 g of protein. Some ingredients include sea salt, sugar and torula yeast. This peanut flavor is not a source of vitamin A or vitamin C.
Cocktail Peanuts
Typically sold in a 12 oz. can, Planters Cocktail peanuts have 170 calories in a 28 g serving and 14 g of total fat, according to the Planters website. Cocktail peanuts have less sodium content than their dry roasted counterparts, with only 5 percent of daily recommended intake. The Cocktail peanuts have the same amount of protein as dry roasted. The product has fewer ingredients than the dry roasted peanuts as it contains only peanuts, cottonseed oil or peanut oil and sea salt.
Honey Roasted
Planters Honey R oasted peanuts are available in 16 oz. and 12 oz. cans. A 28 g serving of honey roasted peanuts from a 12 oz. can has 160 calories, according to the Planters website. Ingredients include peanuts, corn starch and sugar. These peanuts also include 12 g of total fat, 6 g of protein and 115 mg of sodium. The 16 oz. container of Honey Roasted peanuts has slightly more total fat than the 12 oz., with 13 g, though calories and calories from fat remain the same in both.
Benefits
Peanuts are not as expensive as other protein sources, including cheese and hamburgers, according to the American Peanut Council website. Peanuts are also naturally low in sodium content and contain unsaturated fat, which can help keep LDL cholesterol levels down in your body.
