Sperm are the male gamete produced in testes -- a paired male reproductive gland. On average, a man emits 20 to 200 million sperm per ejaculation and if the man's sperm count is very low, the chances of successful fertilization can be decreased dramatically. Statistics show that deficient sperm count accounts for more than 90 percent of all male infertility cases, according to the Stanford University. Ayurvedic herbs may prove useful for the treatment of male infertility caused by low sperm count. Nevertheless, consult with your doctor first before you decide to take any medicinal herb.

Asian Ginseng

Asian ginseng, or Chinese ginseng, an adaptogenic herb of the family Araliaceae, helps men maintain and sustain sperm production and motility, according to the University of Michigan Health System website. The root of Asian ginseng contains greater amounts of phytoestrogens called ginsenosides, which are of clinical relevance in determining the therapeutic course of action among infertile men with low sperm count.

Ashwagandha

Supplementation with Ashwagandha, a popular Ayurvedic herb used in both Indian and Chinese traditional home medicine, seems to improve sperm quantity and quality in men, according to Cureremedies.org. Withanolides, the primary active compounds in ashwagandha root, are considered to be responsible for most of the medicinal properties of the herb.

Eleutherococcus Senticosus

Eleutherococcus senticosus, also called Siberian ginseng and eleuthero, has been shown to increase in sperm count as well as sperm motility in infertile men, according to a study conducted by Chen Z and colleagues at the Department of Urology at Tongji Hospital at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. This herb is characterized by ginsenocides, the putative active compounds, which may give Siberian ginseng property to enhance sperm production.
