A heavy bag is a critical piece of boxing equipment that will be used to help train you how to throw punches correctly with the proper form. Available in choices from 40 lbs. to 200 lbs., a heavy bag offers resistance similar to throwing punches at an opponent. To get you the most out of your heavy bag workouts, you may choose to hang the bag from the ceiling so that it moves and swings just as a person might. A heavy bag installed to a ceiling can be dangerous to the user if it is improperly installed.
Step 1
Locate a stud or beam you would like to hang your heavy bag from. If you are hanging the bag from a ceiling that isn't exposed use a stud finder to help locate a solid beam. Dry wall is not strong enough to support your bag.
Step 2
Measure the area where you want to hang the bag. You will want a 10-foot by 10-foot area to give you enough space to move around the bag. This will also give you enough room to adjust your distance from the bag as it swings.
Step 3
Drill guide holes for the screws. Using the mounting bracket as a template, drill holes with a bit that is smaller than the screws in your kit. These holes will act as a guide and keep you from splitting the wood beam, which can weaken over time, causing the bag fall.
Step 4
Mount the heavy bag bracket. If you kit comes with hanging chains, attach them before hanging the bracket up. Attach the s-hooks to the chains as well. Make sure to close the ends that are attached to the chains by gripping them with pliers.
Step 5
Hang the heavy bag. Use the step ladder to support the bag as you climb up. The closer you can get to the chains the better as you will not have to hold the bag while trying to hang the bag. Attach the open ends of the s-hooks to the D-rings on the end of the bag.
Tips and Warnings
- If your bag has a D ring on the bottom, you can use it to control how far it swings. Attach a bungee cord to the D ring and then use a 35-lb. weight plate to hold the other end of the cord.
