Urinary tract infections (UTI) refer to a common infection of the urethra and bladder, according to Medline Plus. If left untreated, this infection can prove dangerous, as it can spread to the kidneys. Symptoms of UTI include blood in the urine, the constant need to urinate and burning pain. There are specific steps to treat UTI infections.
Step 1
Go to your family doctor and obtain a prescription for an antibiotic to treat your UTI. The antibiotic chosen depends on your age, medical conditions and type of bacteria causing the infection. Your doctor will prescribe such medications as Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin or amoxicillin.
Step 2
Drink one to two glasses of cranberry juice a day. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, studies reveal that cranberry juice can prevent UTIs from occurring. It is still unclear whether cranberries can treat UTIs.
Step 3
Drink large amounts of water. This will serve to clean out your urinary system of bacteria. Do not drink alcohol, orange juice or caffeine-rich beverages, as these can worsen your UTI symptoms.
Step 4
Apply a heating pad to your stomach or flank area to alleviate any pain or pressure.
