Infant reflux is a common condition affecting many babies. Infant reflux is a result of an underdeveloped esophageal sphincter, which is the ring of muscle between the stomach and esophagus that opens and closes each time your infant swallows. Until this muscle or ring matures, stomach content may flow upward and out of the infant's mouth according to MayoClinic.com. Certain steps such as burping frequently, feeding the baby in an upright position and switching to a smaller nipple size may help reduce infant reflux. Additionally, certain herbs that are safe for baby may also relieve reflux symptoms and frequency. Speak with your child's pediatrician before administering herbs to treat this or any health condition.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm has been used for many years as a healing salve for the treatment of burns, boils, ulcers and skin inflammations and it has been taken orally to relieve sore throats, coughs and stomach problems according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Slippery elm contains a substance called mucilage that becomes gel-like when mixed or added to water. Mucilage coats the stomach, throat, stomach and intestines. Slippery elm may be added to infant formula, water or juice. Dosage of slippery elm is typically calculated based on the weight of the infant. For example, a 6 pound baby may take ¼ tsp. up to three times per day.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is another herb that contains mucilage and can help gently restore an infant's pH levels. In addition, aloe vera juice can help aid the digestion process. Aloe vera juice is available at certain health food stores. According to Herbs2000, the dosage of aloe vera varies depending on the condition. To use aloe vera juice as an alternative remedy to treat infant reflux, mix up to ½ tsp. of aloe vera juice in ¼ cup of water or juice up to three times per day.

Gripe Water

Gripe water is a mixture varying ingredients such as chamomile, peppermint, ginger, fennel and dill according to BabySlumber.com. This mixture is usually made at home but is also available in stores; however, commercially-made gripe water may contain alcohol and may not be suitable for infants or young children. This mixture is made by adding crushed chamomile and fennel to boiling water and allowing the mixture to boil for 20 minutes. Strain the mixture and let it cool. Add three to four drops of gripe water to infant formula or administer it with a dropper to reduce infant reflux.
