Vaginal dryness is experienced by just about every woman at some point in her life. Hormone changes, such as menopause and postpartum, are often the reason for the decrease in vaginal moisture. According to Women's Health, other reasons for dryness may include frequent sex, diaphragms, antidepressants, chemotherapy, drying soaps, tampons and condoms. In addition to the dryness, a woman may experience pain, itching and burning. Without natural lubrication, sexual intercourse can be painful and difficult. Regardless of the cause of vaginal dryness, many treatment options exist that are natural and hormone-free.
Step 1
Avoid products that can deplete your natural vaginal lubricants. These products may contain harsh chemicals, such as alcohol, fragrance, detergents and dyes, according to Women's Health. Do not use soap in or near the vaginal opening. Try products that are intended for vaginal cleansing. Water is sufficient for cleansing in most cases.
Step 2
Apply a water-based lubricant before sexual intercourse or any time during the day when vaginal dryness is uncomfortable. These products are available at most pharmacies or shopping centers. Look for products with natural ingredients without fragrance. Some products even come in a suppository form that can be inserted into the vagina for several days of lubrication. Women's Health warns against using petroleum-based products, mineral oil or edible oil in place of water-based lubricants.
Step 3
Purchase a vaginal moisturizing cream. This product is made to improve the health of vaginal tissues for an extended period of time. It only needs to be applied two to three times per week. Some contain phytoestrogens, which are naturally occurring and are said to improve declining estrogen levels. Not all vaginal moisturizers contain phytoestrogens.
Tips and Warnings
- Spend more time engaging in sexual activity before intercourse. The Mayo Clinic advises against rushing into sexual intercourse before being adequately aroused or lubricated. Use the water-based lubricant as an intimate massage gel to help increase arousal. Increase your fluid intake to keep your body hydrated. Experts at the Mother Nature site recommend increasing healthy fat intake like oily fish and sunflower seeds.
- Avoid douching as this can deplete natural vaginal lubrication.
