Shooting a basketball at times seems to be a lost art, a young players want to learn to perform fancy ball tricks and soar through the air for dunks. Good shooters are at a premium, and the good news for young players is that shooting is all about mechanics and practice. Performing fundamental drills can significantly improve your shooting form and results on the court.
One-handed Shooting
Shooting the ball with one hand forces you to learn the proper mechanics since your off hand should only be a guide hand during the shot. While products on the market can help you neutralize the off hand, you can perform the drill effectively by just putting your off hand behind your back or at your side. Start shooting at about five feet away from the base of the goal and only move back as you feel comfortable and under control. Practice one-handed shooting for about five minutes before each practice or game.
On-back Shooting
Shooting while lying on your back helps you learn the proper form and ensures that your shot has good rotation. Lie on your back and simply take your regular shot, shooting the ball straight up into the air. Your wrist should snap and you should be able to see the ball spin backwards. Catch the ball and repeat the drill for about five minutes.
Form Shooting
The Coach’s Clipboard calls form shooting an excellent drill to develop the right form. Perform form-shooting drills for a few minutes every day and get your form down. With form shooting, you just need to work on the proper form about two to five feet away from the basket. The legs are not a part of the shot, you are simply working on the mechanics. Keep your guide hand relaxed and exaggerate your followthrough.
Live Shooting Drills
Live shooting drills should prepare you for game situations. You should work every day at shooting off screens, shooting from spot-up situations and shooting off the dribble, asking for help from a partner as appropriate. By practicing these situations, you can improve your percentage and consistency. Practice live shooting drills at every practice for at least 15 minutes.
