How to Get Kids to Take Fish Oil

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, fish oil and fish oil supplements are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for brain function and normal growth and development. The center suggests the notion that attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning problems and behavioral problems may correlate with lower levels of essential fatty acids. Further research must be done before a conclusion can be made, however. Fish oil comes from fatty fish such as mackerel, albacore tuna and salmon. There are also several fish oil supplement products available for purchase over-the-counter. Like fish, fish oil has a particular odor and taste that kids may not find appealing.

Step 1

Pour a teaspoon of fish oil and give it to your child. If your child refuses, it is best to find another method of giving him the supplement. Try adding it to foods. Do not heat it up unless the product label states that this is fine. You can pour it over vegetables or other foods that may complement the fish oil flavor. Drizzle the oil over a salad and add a salad vinaigrette for a homemade dressing.

Step 2

Mix the fish oil into your child's favorite treat foods. Examples may include yogurt, pudding or blended fruits. Mixing it up in a shake may also minimize the taste. Get creative, and mix it in just about any food your child enjoys eating.

Step 3

Purchase kid-friendly forms of fish oil. There are numerous products available. Ensure the ingredients are considered pharmaceutical grade or are purchased from a reputable merchant. Try a flavored liquid form, flavor-coated capsules, plain fish oil capsules, gummy vitamins and even edible snacks made with fish oil mixed in. Consult your pediatrician or pharmacist about the ingredients if you are unsure.

Tips and Warnings

  • Eating a serving of fatty fish two to three times per week will also provide the same benefits of fish oil supplementation.
  • Fatty fish are known to contain mercury. Be sure the fish oil products are made from fish screened for mercury.
