Human chorionic gonadotrophin, HCG, is a treatment used for female infertility. HCG is a hormone given by injection to help stimulate ovum production and release during ovulation. Woman who do not menstruate or ovulate regularly may benefit from HCG treatments to facilitate egg production. While HCG is a commonly used infertility agent, it carries risks and side effects along with benefits. Speak with your physician to learn more about the possible side effects and risks.
Injection Site Effects
HCG is administered by injection into a muscle. You may experience pain or discomfort in the muscle where HCG is injected. Bruising may occur at the injection site as well. Mild skin irritation may also occur around the injection location.
Swelling
Fluid may accumulate in the body tissues after an HCG injection, resulting in mild swelling of the hands, feet or lower legs, according to Mayo Clinic.com. Water accumulation may add body weight, resulting in weight gain. Swelling may also indicate a more severe reaction to HCG; seek medical attention if you experience swelling to be sure. You may also experience breast swelling and tenderness due to hormonal changes caused by the HCG medication.
Mood Changes
Hormonal reaction to HCG may cause mental changes. You may feel more irritable or restless than normal. Depression may also develop from HCG use. You may experience loss of interest in favorite activities, appetite loss or feeling sad or empty, according to Mayo Clinic.com. While usually mild, symptoms of depression should be discussed with your physician to ensure depression does not progress. You may also experience headaches or increased fatigue while on HCG.
Allergic Reaction
HCG may cause an allergic reaction in some people. Allergic reaction to any medication, including HCG, can be life threatening. An allergic reaction may occur after using HCG for the first time or after subsequent administrations. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to HCG include hives or itchy skin, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Obtain medical attention if you experience allergy symptoms.
Emergency Symptoms
HCG use may cause a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome which can be life threatening, according to Drugs.com. Symptoms of OHSS include severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting; and reduced urination. Swelling of the hands or legs may also occur, though this symptom may also indicate a less severe side effect of HCG use. Seek medical attention right away, if you experience one or more symptom of OHSS, to prevent complications.
