The word stress can refer to any physical, mental, social or emotional stimulus requiring a change or response to the way you think, act or feel. Stress may be the result of issues in the workplace or at home. In addition, lack of sleep, poor nutrition and physical illnesses can cause stress. Herbs such as passionflower may be useful in reducing anxiety and insomnia related to stress. Speak with your medical provider before using passionflower as an alternative treatment for stress.
Signs
Stress is experienced differently by each person; however, some signs of stress can include panic or anxiety attacks, sleeping problems, depression or sadness, drug use, drinking, headaches or migraines, and changes in appetite, according to KidsHealth.org. In addition, stress may lead to high blood pressure, cold or clammy hands, and nervous twitches.
Identification
Passionflower is a member of the Passifloraceae family and is a perennial herb. It has been used for many years as a calming herb to treat anxiety, hysteria, seizures and insomnia, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The flowers of this herb have little or no calming effects, with the majority of sedative properties found in the stems and leaves.
Efficacy
Passionflower has not been extensively researched as a treatment for anxiety or insomnia. However, parts of the plant have tranquilizing and sedative effects that help calm and relieve stress. According to MedlinePlus, evidence exists that passionflower may be as effective in relieving symptoms of anxiety as certain prescription medications.
Dosage
Passionflower is available as tinctures, teas, infusions and liquid extracts. UMMC suggests making an herbal tea using passionflower by adding up to 2 g of the dried herb to 1 cup of boiling water and allowing It to stand for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture, allow it to cool and then drink the tea up to four times per day. If you choose to use the liquid extract or the tincture, UUMC recommends a dosage of up to 30 drops of the extract or up to 60 drops of the tincture, three times per day.
Interactions
Passionflower, when used in conjunction with certain over-the-counter medications and prescription medications, may cause adverse effects. Passionflower can increase the strength of sedative medications such as barbiturates, benzodiazepines and insomnia medications. In addition, if you are taking anticoagulant medications, this herb may affect the blood's ability to clot. This can cause uncontrollable bleeding. Always discuss the possibility of drug interactions with your doctor before starting an herbal treatment.
