Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a triphasic combination birth control pill that contains 21 hormone pills and seven inert pills. The FDA states that the levels of synthetic progestin vary each week in a pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
Hormones
Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains both synthetic estrogen and progestin in the active pills. The FDA notes that the synthetic estrogen is ethinyl estradiol, and the synthetic progestin is norgestimate.
Function
In clinical trials conducted by the FDA, pregnancies occurred in 0.96 out of 100 women, including women who missed a pill. The hormones in Ortho Tri-Cyclen prevent pregnancy through the suppression of ovulation and changes to the cervical mucus and endometrium.
Benefits
Besides pregnancy prevention, Ortho Tri-Cyclen also treats mild acne. The FDA states the synthetic hormones may increase sex hormone binding globulin, which decreases acne.
Risks
The FDA notes that women who smoke 15 or more cigarettes a day or are 35 years and older are at greater risk for cardiovascular side effects when taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
Warning
Ortho Tri-Cyclen should not be taken by women who are pregnant, have thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorder, hepatic adenoma, cerebral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, jaundice from prior oral contraceptive use, breast cancer, endometrium cancer or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
