Cellulite --- those dimpled pockets of fat on your hips and thighs --- can be embarrassing and unsightly. Cellulite can afflict slender and overweight women alike, hence its nickname of "thin woman's fat." Although cellulite generally worsens after age 35, Skin Care News notes that even teenagers are not immune. Many women turn to homemade remedies for help; by tightening and smoothing your skin, these natural treatments may reduce the appearance of cellulite. Apply a small amount to your wrist 24 hours before use to make sure you're not allergic.
Cellulite Features
Cellulite usually appears on the abdomen, hips, buttocks and backs of thighs, and is much more likely to affect women than men. According to Dr. Paul Lazar, professor of clinical dermatology at Northwestern University Medical School, cellulite's lumpy appearance is due to fibrous strands of tissue that connect skin and muscle; pressure from these strands can cause cellulite to pucker and bulge outward. Genetics, hormones and skin thickness can affect the amount and severity of cellulite you will develop. Sluggish circulation, poor diet, inactivity and excess pounds can also play a role.
Coffee Grounds
Natural beauty experts often recommend coffee grounds to reduce cellulite. According to Skin Care News, topically applied caffeine can speed the metabolism of fat and reduce swelling, helping to make cellulite-plagued areas appear smoother. To use a coffee ground remedy, first massage affected areas gently with olive oil. Combine 1/2 cup fresh, damp, cooled coffee grounds with 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and use a circular motion to spread the mixture evenly. Rinse off thoroughly.
Yogurt
To benefit from the cellulite-reducing properties of both coffee and yogurt, you can do as The Daily Glow suggests and mix coffee-flavored yogurt with your usual moisturizing lotion, massaging the mixture into skin daily. Yogurt contains beneficial alpha hydroxy acids. These chemical compounds help to smooth and condition the complexion and even out skin tones, as well as acting as humectants to hold in needed moisture.
Natural Cellulite Control
Steps you can take to reduce cellulite naturally include paring off pounds, exercising and eating a balanced diet. According to the Doctor's Book of Home Remedies, strengthening and toning muscles can help fill out the surrounding tissue, making cellulite less noticeable. Kim Ulen, supervisor of the skin care department at the Cal-a-Vie Spa in Vista, Calif., says that women that suffer from constipation are especially prone to cellulite. Ulen recommends a diet high in fiber to promote healthy elimination. Using a dry brush in a rotating motion on cellulite can stimulate circulation to the area and help remove toxins.
Camouflaging Cellulite
If you're still unhappy with your skin after trying home remedies, you can use the art of camouflage to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Kid's Health states that cellulite is less noticeable on darker skin, and advises using self-tanning lotions. Patti Delsordo, a theatrical hair, wig and makeup designer in Northfield, N.J., recommends spray-on stockings. DelSordo asserts that their polished, reflective look can create a more even skin tone, thereby minimizing the appearance of cellulite.
