Most commonly, the symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) include frequent heartburn and pain in the abdomen. The exact cause of GERD is unclear, though certain factors can contribute to the condition. While you may not be able to reverse GERD, you can manage the symptoms with diet modifications. Avoiding foods such as chocolate, caffeinated beverages, garlic, onions and fast-food is key to reducing bothersome symptoms. Knowing what foods to eat may help ease discomfort after meals.
Meats & Fish
Greasy, fried meats and fish are irritating to the stomach lining, causing acid indigestion among individuals with GERD. Replace these meats as well as cold cuts with unprocessed, less fatty options such as skinless chicken, extra-lean ground beef, soy products such as tofu and baked fish. In addition, avoid adding spices and condiments such as ketchup, which can be bothersome.
Fruits & Vegetables
Citrus fruits are a known culprit for those with GERD, causing heartburn and discomfort. Replace these fruits with acid-free fruits such as apples and bananas. You may also enjoy dried versions of fruits. Vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, broccoli, peas and potatoes are safe options. However, packaged vegetables in cheese or sauce and raw vegetables can irritate some individuals with GERD. Beans and lentils are other healthy options, which can be eaten in casseroles and as a side dish.
Breads & Grains
Grains such as whole wheat pasta (without sauce) rice and whole-grain breads are generally acceptable with GERD. Avoid highly processed breads and bakery items.
Beverages
Coffee (regular and decaffeinated), tomato juice and soda are acidic, making them problematic for those with GERD. Alcoholic beverages may be bothersome, particularly wine. Choose water and apple juice instead. Teas can be irritating (especially peppermint varieties). However, some teas, such as rosemary, may help reduce stomach acid and aid in digestion.
Dairy
Many dairy products can cause heartburn among those with GERD. Avoid whole milk, ice cream, cottage cheese and most cheeses. Replace these items with low-fat or fat-free versions or choose cream cheese, feta, goat cheese and soy products. Some individuals are more sensitive to diary than others, so results will vary.
