Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes pain and inflammation of joints and surrounding tissue. Autoimmune diseases occur when the body attacks healthy cells. The following holistic treatments can be used together or individually.

Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs and Other Supplements

Of all the natural and holistic treatment options, supplements offer the most aggressive approach in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Often high doses of vitamins and minerals are used to combat the effects of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, taking fish oil supplements, turmeric, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate have all shown anti-inflammatory properties.

Nutrition and Special Diets

The rheumatoid arthritis diet calls for daily consumption of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins. It excludes foods that are believed to possibly worsen or cause inflammation, such as white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, dairy products, citrus fruits, sweets, coffee, excess sodium and animal proteins.

Hydrotherapy

The ancient art of using water therapeutically is known as hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy includes taking warm baths, mineral baths, hot springs and whirlpool baths. Some of these techniques are also used in conventional medicine for sprains, arthritis and as part of detoxification programs.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used successfully in the treatment of osteoarthritis, but so far has not been studied specifically for rheumatoid arthritis. It has shown, however, to effectively relieve pain, and has minimal side effects.

Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic therapy has become popular for a variety of conditions. Conventional medicine supports the use of electromagnetic therapy in the treatment of pain, stiffness and inflammation.
