The Side Effects of Sodium Feredetate

Sodium feredetate, also called sodium ironedetate and sold as Sytron, is used to treat iron deficiency anemia and iron deficiency caused by rheumatoid arthritis. It breaks down in the intestines and is better absorbed than other types of iron, according to hematologist Dr. Shirish Kumar of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, India. Unlike some iron preparations, this form also does not stain teeth. Like any medications, sodium feredetate can cause side effects.

Nausea

Nausea commonly occurs when people take any type of iron supplement. Symptoms of iron supplementation are dose-dependent, meaning that people taking a higher dose may have more problems with nausea. Either starting with a low dose and then increasing the dosage or stopping the medications for a few days and then starting at a lower dose may help treat or prevent nausea with this medication. Vomiting blood indicates a possible medication overdose; stop taking the medication and notify your medical practitioner immediately if this occurs.

Diarrhea

Mild diarrhea can also occur in the early stages of treatment with sodium feredetate, Drugs.com reports. Taking higher than normal doses increases the risk of developing diarrhea. Bloody diarrhea can indicate overdose and should be reported to your medical practitioner immediately.

Drug Interactions

Sodium feredetate could interfere with absorption of a number of antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, levofloxacin, ofloxacin and tetracycline, among others. Inform your medical practitioner that you're taking this drug if you're prescribed antibiotics.

Overdose Effects

Sodium feredetate overdose can cause serious, life-threatening side effects, including pallor, drowsiness, abdominal pain, internal bleeding and circulatory collapse. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur. High blood glucose levels, called hyperglycemia and metabolic acidosis can also occur. Untreated overdose can lead to shock and coma.
