Wu Yi tea is a tea that is cultivated from Mount Wuyi in China. It is produced in three types: Wu Yi green, Wu Yi black and Wu Yi oolong. The oolong variety makes up 80 percent of Mount Wuyi tea production. Wu Yi in the oolong variety, also known as wulong tea, is the most popular choice for weight loss.
History
According to the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project, tea has been used as a daily beverage in China since around 300 A.D. It was introduced to Europe in the late 1600s but was only consumed by the rich because of its expense. Once Britain began to import tea in larger amounts, prices dropped and people of all classes were able to enjoy the beverage. Tea began making its way to American colonists in the early 1700s.
Cultivation
Wu Yi teas grows on a mountain in the northen Fujian provence in China. It is a small area that is approximately 37 square feet in size. Tea leaves are picked when the plant is mature, and only the top leaves are taken. The leaves are then dried, typically eight to 12 hours. After drying is complete, the leaves are moved to a cool, humid, room to ferment, or oxidize. The fermentation time depends on the variety of tea desired, such as green, oolong or black. The longer the fermentation, the darker the tea. Wu Yi tea is undergoes oxidation for approximately two to three hours.
Misconceptions
Though Wu Yi tea may aid your weight loss regimen, it is not because of its Wu Yi variety. Teas are often named for the region it was grown and produced. Unless otherwise noted, all tea, aside from herbal tea, comes from the same plant called Camellia sinensis. Wu Yi tea has the same basic properties as all other teas that come from the warm weather evergreen known as the tea plant.
How to Use Wu Yi Tea
The Polyphenols that are found naturally in Wu Yi tea, as well as other varieties, are known to slightly increase your metabolism. A stronger metabolism may help you lose weight more easily. Drinking 2 or 3 cups of Wu Yi tea a day allow you to consume plenty of those helpful polyphenols as well as keep you hydrated. Steep one tea bag, or 1 oz. of loose leaf tea leaves in 8 oz. of boiling water for five to 10 minutes, cool, and drink.
