Characterized by a dry, itchy scalp that sheds skin flakes onto your shoulders, dandruff is a condition which causes discomfort and embarrassment for many. Dandruff can have many causes, such as fungal growth on the scalp, sensitivity to hair care products, eczema or infrequent shampooing. Severe dandruff is usually caused by an excess of pityrosporum ovale, a naturally occurring fungus on the human scalp. Traditional cures call for specialized shampoos; many people save money, however, by using simple, cheap and easy-to-find ingredients that make up a variety of home remedies that can neutralize detrimental fungus growth.
Tea Tree Oil
A common ingredient in dandruff-reducing shampoos, tea tree oil is found in the leaves of the Australian tea tree. Primarily an antifungal agent, the oil has also been used as an antibiotic and antiseptic, according to MayoClinic.com. The remedy requires a user to shampoo the oil into her hair daily until the scalp has returned to a healthy state. Users should discontinue use of the oil if they notice any allergic reactions such as a burning sensation.
Fenugreek Seeds
A paste made from fenugreek seeds, used in many home recipes and exotic cooking, is a commonly used dandruff treatment. Soaking 2 tbsp. of seeds in water overnight makes them soft enough to crush into a paste. The paste is then applied to the hair and scalp in the morning, allowing it at least half an hour to take effect. Afterward the paste is rinsed from the hair using a ritha, or soap-nut, solution. This is meant to be a four-week remedy: apply twice a week for the first two weeks and then once a week for the final two.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar, in its many forms, is mildly acidic, whereas shampoos are strongly alkaline in pH. The acidity in vinegar can help kill bacteria and fungus growth on your scalp, as well as clear away any buildup from hair-care products. Apple cider vinegar should be mixed in a 1:3 ratio with water; water being the greater part of the mixture. The vinegar can then be applied to the scalp at the beginning of the shower and rinsed out at the end. This treatment can be repeated until the desired results are achieved; there may be a lingering odor, however.
