A double chin occurs when excess fat cells accumulate under the chin. A second chin may be the result of general obesity, or an unwanted part of the aging process. As you age, your facial muscles begin to lose tone, which can result in skin sagging and droopiness around the jowls, neck and chin. A cosmetic surgeon can improve the appearance of a double chin by removing the excess fat through liposuction, or you can strengthen the corresponding muscles with facial exercises.
Tongue Exercises
In his book "Five-Minute Face-Lift," Reinhold Benz describes several exercises to tighten skin and improve a double chin. Stick your tongue out as far as you can, as though attempting to touch the tip of your chin. Hold until you feel muscle burn at the back of the tongue and under the chin. Benz also recommends opening your mouth slightly, while looking straight ahead and pressing your tongue firmly against the top of your mouth. Hold for around 30 seconds.
Neck Stretch
Tilt your head back so that your're looking at the ceiling. Bring your lower lip up until it covers your upper lip. Stretch your lower lip as far as possible while counting to five. You should feel the skin around the neck and under the chin become taut. Relax, returning your head to its normal position and repeat five times. Practice this exercise twice a day for best results.
Chin and Jaw Toner
This exercise, part of the Faceworks program, is designed to tone flabbiness and loose skin under the jaw and also decrease a double chin. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Jut your lower jaw forward so you can feel the skin stretch under the jaw. Hold for 10 seconds. Gradually lower your head about 3 inches, then slowly lift it again. Move your head up and down slowly in this manner 20 times. You should keep your head straight without turning to either side.
Ceiling Chew
When standing or sitting, tip your head back and look up at the sky or ceiling. Begin a chewing movement, as though you were chewing a piece of gum. You will feel the muscles working under the chin. Repeat the chewing motion about 20 times. This exercise will help improve a double chin, according to the Dermaxine website.
