Cancer is a group of diseases in which irregular cells divide uncontrollably and can destroy healthy body tissues. While early diagnosis and treatment are key for surviving cancer, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, exercise and dietary changes may help manage your symptoms and the side effects of conventional treatment, reports MayoClinic.com. A nutritious, balanced diet can support your recovery, regardless of your treatment type. For best results, seek specific guidance from your doctor.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide an assortment of antioxidants, which help protect your body from potentially cancer-causing toxins, known as free radicals. Consuming a variety of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, such as berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, leafy greens and broccoli, can help support your immune system and prevent additional infections and diseases which can hinder your recovery. One form of complementary medicine for cancer patients involves consuming a freeze-dried herb and vegetable product that contains mushrooms, date, legumes, leeks onions, ginger, American ginseng and other items believed to support cancer treatment. You typically consume the blend once daily, mixed with water or various soups. The soup is considered generally safe if you consume it as part of a nutritious diet, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). The only known side effects involve bloating and a sense of fullness.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, lake trout, flounder, sardines and herring, provide significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. These are healthy fats that enhance heart health and may help alleviate the inflammation associated with cancer and cancer treatment. Fatty fish are also rich sources of protein, which can help your body tissues heal and enhance your immune system. The American Cancer Institute (ACI) recommends incorporating high-quality protein sources, such as fish, into your small, frequent meals -- every one to two hours -- to help manage the effects of appetite loss, one of the most common problems for cancer patients. Fatty fish is also emphasized by the macrobiotic diet. Proponents of macrobiotics believe that the diet, which emphasizes Buddhist philosophies and natural, whole foods, can prevent or help treat cancer. Though the macrobiotic diet as cancer treatment lacks evidence of effectiveness, the ACS encourages some of its principles, such as eating ample fruits, vegetables and fish.

Nuts and Oils

Nuts and oils are valuable sources of healthy, unsaturated fat. Dietary fats are important for nutrient absorption, healthy body tissues and energy during low- to moderate-intensity exercise. The ACI recommends incorporating foods rich in fat and calories into your meals and snacks to prevent or reverse weight loss, particularly if your appetite is low. Nuts, such as pecans and walnuts, also contain ellagic acid, which has potent antioxidant properties and may help combat cancerous cells in your body. While the effects and benefits of ellagic acid require more investigation, consuming nutritious food sources of the nutrient can promote your wellness regardless. To reap ample benefits of nuts and oils, incorporate olive oil, canola oil, peanut or almond butter and/or nuts into your meals and snacks regularly.
