You can cut calories and workout intensely but if your metabolism is slow your weight loss will be also. Metabolism is the process by which food (fuel) is turned into the energy that powers all the processes of the body and mind. A fast metabolism turns the food to energy quickly as the calories are burned. Learn how to boost your metabolism naturally to speed your weight loss.

Step 1

Start an exercise program and stick to it. You can join a gym or take aerobics classes or try a new sport or activity that incorporates physical activity such as tennis, roller skating, rock climbing or ballroom dancing. The key to staying with a program so that your metabolism is raised is finding something physical you truly enjoy.

Step 2

Build up your muscles to build your metabolism. Invest in three- or five-pound weights with which you can do bicep curls, shoulder shrugs and side lifts by starting at your sides and lifting the weights up to shoulder height. Start with a few repetitions at a time and build up. Increase core strength by doing abdominal crunches and leg lifts.

Step 3

Keep your calories at 1,000 or more per day. Dropping too low in caloric levels will lower your metabolism. Eat frequent small meals rather than three large ones. Concentrate on consuming whole grains, lean meats, fresh vegetables and fruits and low-fat dairy items.

Step 4

Drink lots of water. Keep a bottle of water with you so you can sip throughout the day. Water aids the metabolic processes of the body helping it to work more efficiently. Water will also help flush out toxins as well.

Step 5

Eat breakfast every day. You need fuel to get your day going. After sleeping all night your body has gone into fasting mode which slows the metabolism. Eat what you like from healthy choices and don't feel restricted to traditional breakfast foods if you do not care for them.

Step 6

Intake supplements which help boost metabolism. Among these are CLA which helps build muscle, B vitamins that help increase energy (especially B-12) and Co-enzyme Q10 that provides energy to the muscles.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink green tea and eat spicy foods as these are believed to be beneficial in raising metabolism. Exercise in the morning to give you a metabolism boost that stays throughout the day. Get enough sleep every night so that you are not tempted to reach for high calorie items to boost your energy during the day.
