The barbell is a straight metal bar with circular weights attached to each side used in weightlifting to sculpt muscles. Some barbell sets have changeable weights while others do not. Frank Fitzpatrick, in an article published in 2010 for "The Dallas Morning News" Sports Day section, credits fitness buff Bob Hoffman with the original design of the barbell.

The Barbell

Barbell Exercises reports that the benefits of using the barbell in exercise is that it allows you a wider range of exercise possibilities without a lot of equipment. To do most barbell exercises, all you need is the barbell itself, some weights and a workout bench. These exercises can also be conducted at home or at a gym. The barbell helps stabilize the core muscle groups in the body and tones smaller muscles that are often overlooked.

Inventing the Barbell

According to Fitzpatrick, in 1923, at the age of 25, Bob Hoffman designed the first barbell, allowing weightlifters to choose the amount of weight they wanted to lift. Previously, weightlifters had only the option of using dumbbells that had a preset amount of weight. Hoffman's passion for weightlifting allowed him to create a successful Olympic weightlifting team and create the York Barbell company.

Exercise Philosophy

The invention of the barbell and Hoffman's role in the history of weightlifting was based on nationalistic goals and a disappointment with the performance of the United States in the world, according to Dr. John Fair, Professor of History at Auburn University in an article in the 1987 Summer edition of the Journal of Sport History. According to Dr. Fair, Hoffman began the first national weightlifting championship and won the title in 1927. Disappointed with the United States' performance in the Olympics , Hoffman was passionate about seeing the country obtain a better footing in future competitions. He became obsessed with seeing the United States become a weightlifting powerhouse.

York Barbell

The York Barbell company, founded in 1932, based its equipment on Hoffman's exercise philosophy making major steps in the development of barbells and barbell exercises. The company has been a forerunner in the weightlifting industry, leading Olympic weightlifting teams and designing innovative barbell equipment for the military and the public. Profits from the York Barbell company were used towards the goal of increasing the United States' place in worldwide weightlifting competitions.
