Omega 3 Contrary Effects

Health professionals with the American Heart Association recommend increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids to help decrease your risk of heart disease. While eating fatty fish may boost your dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids, your doctor may also recommend treatment with a omega-3 supplement. Taking an omega-3 fatty acid supplement may have effects contrary to those intended with this natural fish oil supplement. Talk with your medical provider if you have any questions or concerns about unwanted effects of omega-3 fatty acids.

Fishy Breath or Oral Taste

While you are taking this supplement, you may notice your breath has an unpleasant fishy odor. You may also develop a fishy taste in your mouth. If you are bothered by these side effects, consult your medical provider for further evaluation and care.

Nosebleeds

Elevated levels of omega-3 fatty acids in your body may make it more difficult for your blood to clot normally. Consequently, you may experience bleeding complications as a side effect of fish oil treatment. Bleeding problems may include recurrent nosebleeds or slow wound healing. If you have a pre-existing blood-related medical condition, seek the advice of your physician before using an omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Nausea, Vomiting or Diarrhea

Omega-3 fatty acids may aggravate your stomach, leading to side effects of nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, MedlinePlus warns. Loose bowel movements may be uncomfortable and may cause cramping or a feeling of fullness. Taking your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids with food may diminish or prevent stomach irritation. Discuss severe stomach-related side effects with your doctor if such problems arise.

Burping or Gas

You may burp more than usual while taking a fish oil supplement. Gasiness may also cause bloating or flatulence, which can be embarrassing. Excessive burping may also exacerbate the side effect of unpleasant-tasting breath.

Skin Rash

Treatment with omega-3 fatty acids may result in the appearance of red, inflamed patches of skin across varying regions of your body. These patches may itch or appear unusually dry or flaky. A severe skin reaction, such as hives, should be reported to a medical professional immediately, as this side effect may be a sign of an allergic reaction to the supplement.
